Elroy Ink
Your hometown?
My hometown is Geelong, Victoria. After living in inner-city Melbourne for most of my adult life it was nice to make the move to a smaller, more easy going city. I can see large eucalypts from out my studio window - and in summer the surf beaches are only 15 minutes away. I do miss Melbourne coffee though!
Favourite type of food?
Thai. Mexican. Italian. Sorry, just can't decide.
Favourite restaurant?
My new favorite restaurant is 'Union Dining' in Richmond, Melbourne. Inventive european inspired food, set in relaxed, stylish surrounds.
Favourite recipe?
Admittedly I'm an average cook but I usually have some success with Jamie Oliver's basic rissotto recipe. From there, you can kinda add whatever you like.
Favourite market?
Either, Camden Market in London - which is big and brimming with excitement or Salamanca Market in Hobart which is serene and heart warming.
Favourite travel destination?
Paris. It is a cliche, but it's just so beautiful.
Dream travel destination?
Zanzibar, Africa. An exotic location with beautiful white sand beaches. Not to mention the word itself, sounds like somewhere unreachable!
What do you enjoy most about making your products? Where do you draw your inspiration from?
When I start a project I genuinely have no idea where (or if!) I'll end up. The potential to create something that is truly unique is the biggest challenge, but it is also very exciting. I actually draw my inspiration from anywhere and everywhere ... music, old book covers, the fabric from my children's wardrobe ... then of course there's this thing called the internet.
How long does it take to make one of your creations? Anything interesting about the process that you would like to mention?
Sometimes it might take a day to come up with something. Other times I'll struggle with a particular design for weeks until finally the pieces fit together. In a way, I think processes get in the way of pure creativity, yet you need a solid process to get you to where you are going.
In your words, what makes your products unique?
My projects are a glimpse into my mind and soul. So unless there is another me out there then everything I do is uniquely Elroy!
