Your Hometown And Your Favourite Thing About It?
I live in Belgrave, a small town outside Melbourne, Australia. I love living here because Melbourne is such a vibrant, artistic city with a lot of support and resources for artists and designers of all descriptions. Belgrave is close enough to benefit from all the city has to offer but far enough away to enjoy the trees and escape the hustle and bustle.
Favourite Food?
I loooove food and we are so spoilt for choice in Melbourne I couldn't possibly decide! I do tend to eat a lot of Thai, Japanese and Indian food though. I love anything with a lot of flavor and spice.
Favourite Restaurant?
It would have to be a toss up between Ben K Sushi House in Hawthorn for incredible authentic Japanese food, or Vegie Bar in Fitzroy for a fantastic variety of vegetarian dishes.
Favourite Recipe?
My partner makes a pumpkin risotto to die for but my specialty would either be my Morrocan stew with cous cous or spicy lentil soup.
Favourite Market?
The Rose St Artist Market in Fitzroy is the best art, fashion and design market in Melbourne where the craftspeople have direct contact with customers to sell any manner of weird and wonderful things. It's great, and I should know- I have a stall there every week!
Your Favourite Travel Spot?
Being a Sagittarius I just love to travel! I really like being out in nature so I love going camping. There are so many amazing places all over Australia to get lost in... I have also travelled quite a lot through Eastern Europe and Turkey- every place has its own unique reason for being wonderful I couldn't possibly choose a favorite!
Dream Travel Destination?
I would love to go to India one day, they have such a rich textile tradition (heaven for a fabric geek like me!) and an interesting culture that I would love to explore.
What do you enjoy most about making your products? Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I love giving old garments and vintage fabrics a new life. Doing my small part to help the environment by using mostly recycled fabrics and found objects is very rewarding and inspiring. Plus I always get a giddy little thrill when something is finished and has turned out beautifully.
How long does it take to make one of your creations?
Depending on the item, usually between a couple of hours and a few days. Sometimes I need to wait for all the right fabrics to speak to me - I tend to torture myself a bit about what to combine with what to get the best result. Although working with reclaimed fabrics can present it's own challenges it can also greatly benefit the design process, encouraging me to be more creative with what I've got and hopefully producing more interesting results.
What makes your creations unique?
Other than a few exceptions almost everything I do is a one-off, ensuring my customers have something that is uniquely theirs. I try not to conform to any particular styles or trends, I just make items that I believe to be beautiful and encourage those who wear them to have as much fun wearing it as I have making it!
